Born and bred from Pukekohe, Sth Auckland, New Zealand, surrounded by music all my life, (ie: Weekend House Parties!) and Kapa Haka…with sweet harmonies from mum and my aunties, which I could hear through the bedroom walls, this was to be my Vocal Training Grounds, and eventually took up the guitar.
Although I could not read music, everything I learnt and sang was ‘by ear’, even to this day. My first public performance was at our school play, we were just fill-ins, but we had alot of fun and my passion for music began. It was not until I arrived in Australia 1996, my first live performance was in a Duo, called ‘PatchworK’ and we played at The Orchard in Chatswood. Later on myself and a good friend started up a local band called ‘Soul’d, an eight piece RnB, Funk, Reggae, Disco Band, with the wonderful guidance of Jazz singer and vocal coach, Joy Yates, from Newport whom introduced us to amazing singers and musicians along the way, ie: Jade Macrae, Mahalia Barnes, Prinnie Stevens, Dave and Moses Macrae, Jimmy Barnes, Victor Rounds, Kimi Tupaea, Mark Williams, Erana Clark etc..what an eye opener! Eventually all good things come to an end, and after having my second child, decided to take a break.
7 years later, due to a local fundraiser, another great friend, Steve Rota, and I put together the band Kotahi Groove (To Groove As One) alongside amazing musicians,
with passion and fun – our musical journey continues! We look forward to catching up with y’all Groovettes, on that Dance floor!
